Too much Gear lever movement is rarely to do with inside gearbox. Much more likely to be worn shift cables and bushes.

Welcome along. The RX7 is nice!

When i first got my atr the gearchange sucked, but it was just clutch fluid gone off, which seems to be neglected in the service schedule Although that won't be your issue, but an easy thing to change to sharpen her up.
