Morning all,

I picked up my W reg ATR, so pre facelift, last Monday and I'm loving the car so far.

My previous car was a Mk4 Golf 1.8T and was rubbish tbh!

My household is now an all Japanese one, as I also own a 1993 Mitsubishi Colt Gti that has been track prepared and I just did a track day at Castle Combe on Saturday, my wife also owns an MX-5.

I've already found loads of good info on the site, but after looking over the car checking fluids etc yesterday I couldn't work out what the little valve that controls a flap on the air box opening does? Is it something to do with Vtec? I'd like to fit a Typhoon at some point or at least mod the OEM airbox but am wandering if this valve needs to remain or whether the vacuum (I presume?) tube can be blanked off and the valve binned?

Also is there a sticky thread of part numbers or anything like that? Something like that would be really useful for ordering parts from Honda.

I'll leave it at that for now.

Cheers.

Welcome matey

There is a sticky for modding the OEM airbox.

I'm sure there is one for the parts list but it may just be the parts catalog download.

Someone who knows will clear it up I'm sure.

Welcom again :agree:

Welcome :hello2:

For parts, it would be worth speaking to Andy (vtecdirect on here) as he can normally beat Honda prices for the same gear, or better.
:agree:

Hope you enjoy your stay :)

you can take that valve off and blank the tube, gives it abit more induction roar for no money! took mine off when still had my airbox on with no problems. you leave the tube blanked off when you fit induction kit. :agree:
they open up at 100k!

There's a guide on here for modding the box, but yes it involves blanking of the pipe... its just an air restrictor and opens depending on throttle position.
I have done the air box mod and i have to say it makes a big difference, my mpg suffers a bit but power is up (proven on the guide) and its alot more responsive.
Also if your looking to sort the car out clean the EGR plate and valve that made a HUGE difference to mine as far as repsonse went

Ah yeh, I have found the airbox thread but cant view it yet as I haven't paid the £10, I joined just before I started looking at ATR's so just wanted to dip into the forums for some info, now I have one I'll join up properly.

What's involved with cleaning the EGR then?

Same for the EGR matey, there's a "how to" somewhere around here... :)

Just need a few basic tools, some carb cleaner and OCD to get it all shiny again :D

I'll have a look for the post in a bit if you have no luck finding it :agree:

Think I've found my first fault with the car?

I'm guessing the headlight washers should work when you use the windscreen washers?

Mine don't seem to be working when the windscreen wash is activated and I can't find anything else that would control the headlight washers.

It's a bit of a pain to check/fix because it's all hidden away behind the front bumper but there are two motors/pumps, one for the main, one for the lamp washers.

You could also check the fuse box to see if it's blown but I would have thought they'd run off the same circuit - worth checking though. :agree:

...and welcome. :)

Cheers.

I take it they use the same tank for screenwash?

I'll get the wife to operate the washers and see if I can hear the headlight pump making a noise.

It's no biggy at the mo, but don't they have to work come MoT time due to the Xenon's?

Although I've read the Xenon's had to be fitted with washers at time of manufacture and aren't actually tested at MoT?

I have the same issue Matt, motor goes but nothing comes through... would need to remove splash guard and bumper to get to the pipe work. You might get away with just the splash guard and at least be able to disconnect the pipe and see if water gets out of the pump as a first port of call. :)

Headlight washers and windscreen washers use the same bottle yup :agree:

I don't know if they are tested at MOT, it may be if they are installed they must be working.

I'd be surprised if they failed an MOT on it, not many cars have headlamp washers. :dunno:

As above, it's the same washer bottle.

I know it's not an ATR but this is my other toy on a recent photo shoot for Japanese Performance magazine at Combe a few weeks ago, I'm a bit proud of it:
