As discussed in 'How well can the ATR be modified' thread.

How about using the swear filter to change common txt spk to proper english, albeit highlighted in bold. Other forums have done this on various levels, for example autocorrecting VTECH to 'I can't spell VTEC correctly' etc.

Reduces the need for Pete to interject every time someone uses u instead of you, and he can still have a word if they manage to confuse the filter as obviously they'll be having real issues with the English language.

Tell me it doesn't make sense? :dunno:

It's not a particularly arduous process is it Dan?

Just need a list of the common ones people use.

u
wot
dat
ne
m8

etc..

Everytime some one types a new one just mods correct it and add it to the list, can't be any more time consuming to what pete already does? :dunno:

Can we also change the word "spirited"?

People that say "i went for a spirited drive blah blah" sound like a right Brian Cant. For the love of boys, just say you took you car out for caning, thrashing or whatever.

Or how about we just encourage all users to type full English? It really isn't that difficult is it?

Maybe it's just an age thing?

That's what we do now, and it ends up with threads full of Pete saying 'No text speak :nono: '.

You can't educate pork, so might as well put some filters in place so that we can understand them a bit easier, and Pete doesn't have to spend all his days dishing out reminders.

It just puts a sticker plaster over the problem rather than actually addressing it. How long before the "swear filter" is full up with text speak? Pete would be back to square one an then we'd have threads full of people saying that it hadn't been a problem for a year (say) so why is it a problem now?

If I had my way you wouldn't be able to submit a post with text speak in it. Now that would be progress and save Pete time.

Its only a database, so it will fill up. It may be 100 words or a million, I have no idea how much space IP Board forum software allows you but it is finite.

Ah, I am with you, I had the wrong idea of it filling up, like every time someone typed 'u' it would fill one space. :evil4:

I don't think it will be an issue, we're talking purely about the most common ones, maybe 20-30 or so at the most.

Like I said above, things like u (you) m8 (mate), etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would appreciate not having to read 'No text speak :nono:' on every thread for the odd slip up.

Obviously, when some clown comes in with "yea m8, wil u chek oot ma sik ATR innit I got bare skilz m8" then fair enough, he should quite rightly be stuck down.

Is it really that harsh to ask people to, politely, stop from using text talk that way I do at the moment? :dunno:
I thought I was being fairly polite..... :agree:

It's not that it's harsh, it's tedious to go trawling through it all and personally I find that often, it detracts from the forum more than the alleged offences do.

If you've really got nowt better to do than tell people off for it then I guess I'm fighting a lost cause.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather not have to do it in the first place. :agree:

And the reason it can seem tedious is due to all the offenders..... :D

Exactly, so adding a few of the most common ones so they're auto-corrected yet highlighted in bold would mean less work for you, less annoyance for everyone else that clicks 'View New Content' to see 5 threads of 'No text talk please'...

To me, it seems like a win win situation. :agree:

Then, you can even give people a proper bollocking when they manage to still slip some though... :evil4:
