Afternoon everyone,
I am no stranger to japcars - I've had Hondas, a Toyota Levin bz-r, Toyota starlets, 200sx etc and am on the look out for a clean accord type r. I currently drive an audi a4 special edition 2.0t but am going to sell the car for something cheaper (atr) to free up some house deposit money.
I am going to look at an ATR this evening and know the kind of things to look out for and will hunt out the buyers guide which I'm sure exists on here somewhere. The only question I will ask is. is mileage a biggy on these or is it a case of regular servicing done on time and it will last like other Hondas.
I've also seen the price varies a lot on them.....

Anyways hello and I hope to be posting pics of ATR in future

Hello and welcome.

Mileage should not be an issue so long as she's been serviced correctly. I know of one that is over 200K miles and is always tracked...... plus she's still on the original head gasket!

And here's the buyers guide....

Thank you! Guessing HG are only a problem if servicing isn't kept in line? Also, I should have my eye out for rust now shouldn't I? I thought the bilt hamber rusty Datsun days were over haha. I'll take a look through the guide - thanks.

They are actually pretty good for rust compared to most other 15 year old cars. The front arches are the places to check. I recently sold my 1999 ATR and it had no rust, so they do exist with no rust.

Head Gasket should not be a problem if it has been properly serviced, good luck with your search :agree:

thank you - unfortunately I can't put a deposit on one until I know mine is sold but I don't think I will have much issue selling mine I hope. I'm viewing a 2002 this evening.

Well I can see why you guys like these machines! Overall car seemed straight. Engine was very quiet on idle - no tapping from head, I couldn't drive it due to being sorn but owner was mechanic and took me out in it. Box seemed fine and it pulled really strongly. There was a bit of rust - not heaps but it was there - tiny bit in bootwell and a little underneath but I don't think it looked too bad... Its hard to tell until you dig away at it. Im pretty sure I'd like it but its a shame I couldn't drive it.

Don't buy without driving it. Rust in boot well was probably just surface rust as the boot leaking is a common issue, easy fix. Where was the other rust?

Tiny bit showing itself in the arches and I mean real tiny - bit of surface rust on underbody i.e. rear subby bits. None around turrets and none on the bootlid. I do need to drive it really don't I and don't know how I can. Seemed a good one too

Tiny, rust is always greater than what you can see. Which arches Front or Rear? Inside or outside?

The paint on the outside of one of my rears had bubbled a tiny but, touched it with a flapper disc on an angle grinder to sand it off and a hole appeared. I had to weld some new arch in, the insde of both rears needed replacing too, you can check these by prodding them with something if the owner is not looking, or rip out the boot lining and reach down the side and feel the inside of the arch, you won't reach it all though.

On fronts you need to look at the corrosion warning threads on here, or my picture thread, to know where to look but this can also be checked from inside the cabin. Basically up and to the right of the accelerator pedal bracket and the same place behind the heater box on the nearside. Also poke hard around the subframe mounting bracket at the rear of the front subframe where it joins the underbody between the sill and the chassis rail. Check all brake and fuel pipes, and clutch hard line for excessive rust too.

Thanks guys - didn't feel right so didn't do it. Went to view a pre-facelift the other night and put a deposit down - Chassis legs were mint as was the bay and the bodywork was very clean. It was also RED :-).

This is it here - he has only had it a month or so but prefers the toyotas:
