Tonight at around 8pm the current host turned the database off that feeds this forum, they gave me no warning whatsoever.

The reason being the database has grown to quite a large size and they wanted it shrinking. Instead of asking me, they just turned it off, and then they informed me by email some time after.

Disgraceful behaviour.

So, I've got my developer to start migrating the data over to my companies hosting platform at my expense - that way we can me sure we never get held to ransom.

There might be some downtime in the early hours whilst we do this work, because time is of the essence I'm afraid we won't be giving much notice but we will try and keep disruption to a minimum.

Thanks for your understanding.

That's generous of you, Ed. I hope it's not too expensive.
In contrast with some of the views expressed on this forum in earlier posts, I'd have no objection should you need to raise the subscription a little.

No it's OK, the monthly cost will be about the same but I'll have to pay my developer to do the database work which my company will stomach. Essentially it's out of hours work.

...and to be honest, I want to get away from the current host because they've messed us about before.

If they take it down again without notice, I'll forward their contact details so we can all call them and ask for the site back.

Bart do you think I'm doing this for fun? I really don't want to be sat up late at night tossing around with databases and arguing with suppliers.

... it's not like I have to get up and do a job in the morning.

Anyway, there will be some downtime because we need to lockdown the database and stop people posting. This will be as late as possible and in to the small hours of the morning. We probably won't turn the forum back 'on' again until 7-8AM the next day.

Once the old host has sorted the domain transfer that is. Hopefully in the next few days.

I'd never let a host control the domain name... you're tying yourself in to their timescales :agree:

No choice unfortunately.

I registered it years ago with 123 Reg and they're proving awful.

Even so unless you're a registrar you have no control over the release?

I used to use Fasthosts, then ended up transferring everything to 123-reg years ago as Fasthosts were a bunch of idiots and wanted to charge for every change. I have to say though, that with 123-reg I've never had a problem with changing name servers or playing with the DNS. At the end of the day, if the registrar allow you to freely change name severs then there's no problem with staying with them (in my view) as the DNS can be handled at the name server end.

I take it you're moving the domain name to a new registrar, hence having to wait for them to make the first move?

This site is running on a Fasthosts VPS... hence the problems as you mention.

Moving to a VPS on our company owned VS setup.

123 Reg at the minute have locked my control panel out because of an *unrelated issue on another domain, essentially they won't let me touch accordr.org. I've lodged a formal complaint with Tucows, hopefully they'll get the domain released to me.

*I raised a dispute with them and as a result they've taken it on themselves to lock me out, even though it is ME that has the dispute NOT them! Really underhand tactics. Essentially they're saying "drop the dispute and you can have control back".

PS: We aren't a registrar, whilst we have ~300 domains on file it's still not enough to warrant being a Registrar.

It does seem a bit shit from 123-reg's side I agree... not sure why they'd lock your account when you're disputing something though, but then again I don't know what their rules are in these cases.

Fasthosts were a shower of shite when I used them about 8 years ago, and it looks like they still are!

Yeah Fasthosts offload support to India, problem is the support there is tier 1 "is it plugged in" time wasters.

If you need any form of real technical support, it's ticket system only and often they throw a generic reply at you until you harass them to fix it.

They aren't exactly cheap either, for a big company with supply on their side. For example a VPS from us at *cost will be ~£150 more a year, and that's a mere 12:1 contention, multihoned in docklands on arguably the best networks in the country. Retail price of this is £995 +vat per year.

*cost = hardware, software, power, cooling, maintenance, switching etc.
