Hi all. My name is David, I'm from Glasgow. I have been a fan of the accord type R for 8 years, since I first sat in the passenger seat and got to feel the v-tec kick in. (That feeling was only bettered by a honda fireblade powered catterham). Until now I have had to build up my driving history as the insurance would have left me bankrupt. These cars are becoming rare, and even rarer to find one that hasn't been tarted up by people that mistakenly think they know better than honda. So I think it's getting close to a 'now or never' situation.

I have been watching the market (pistonheads, autotrader, gumtree, although I'm skeptical about that last one) for the past couple of weeks to get a feel for what's on offer, and how much the owners value these fantastic cars.

Ideally, I would love a relatively un-modded, pirate black, pre facelift model, with a good service history. (Not asking much eh?) I'm hoping to either stumble upon this, or be nudged in the right direction in the next 4-8 weeks, once I have the cash saved up.

I thought it best, to try and get ahead of the curve with my search and I couldn't think of a better place than here, to hopefully fulfil my dream.

Damn that's some fast response times. Definitely the right place for that. I have read a few articles on this site, and had seen about the group insurance. But thanks for the heads up Tim. I just renewed my insurance on my ford puma at the end of January, and although I expect the premium to rise, I'm hoping to switch it, once I find the type R I'm looking for. I'm 31 just so you know, so the age limit won't be an issue. Thanks for taking the time to read my long ass post. I thought it best to give a little background information. I didn't want to come across as abrupt.

Good luck in your search pal, I too wanted one for ages and like yourself decided to bite the bullet as felt that as these cars got older it would either a) pass me by or b) be difficult to find a decent one. Ultimately I'm glad I did, as although I've not mine as long as some others its coming up to 2 years of ownership and honestly, every drive feels special. I usually get itchy feet after a year of owning a car, but am happy to say this is a keeper.

I just love the interaction when driving it, like you say the noise, the way the steering 'talks'to you, the way you can feel the lsd digging in on those corners and hauling the car along, suddenly it's almost as if a bend has become a straight, the car remains unflustered. All this in a car that is practical enough to carry my 2 kids around in safety and being relatively comfortable, whilst also having the potential to become a quasi touring car, all of this cloaked in Honda reliability.

Don't get me wrong, they do have their issues which you'll find on here, but for the money in my opinion as an overall package, they're hard to beat.

Couldn't have said it better myself Nelson!

Thats over 2 years I've owned mine and even as a daily driver it still makes me smile every time I drive it.

With the right mods like what I've got on mine it feels like driving a touring car...which I love! I have sacrificed some of the comfort but I love the way the car feels now...I actually prefer it to my DC2! Still amazes me how well it handles...it just destroys the road when its dry!

Hi nelson. I enjoyed reading your post there. It pretty much sums up my situation and passion for driving. I have a son who is coming up on 3 years old, so my ford puma is getting too small for my needs. Although something bigger is in order, I refuse to resign myself to a zafira type family car. When I'm by myself I want to know that I can have a little fun with my car. Luckily the accord is also aesthetically pleasing. If a car looks good, then you'll be more inclined to keep it in the best shape possible. It was actually an accord type R owner who advised me to get the puma. I have owned it for almost 5 years now. And I will be sad to see it go, but it'll be worth it. I don't see itchy feet being a problem for me. But I'll just need to take my time and make sure I don't rush into buying a bucket that's been mollested, as opposed to modified.

I love how I can sense the passion you guys have, from the way you speak about your cars/experiences. I've definitely come to the right place.

Welcome, best of luck in finding a nice ATR, they are about and its certainly worth paying to get a good one, many these days look good on the surface but are usually pretty rough and riddled with problems. Just take your time and look at plenty :agree:

The advice I would give you in all honesty is don't insist upon a black pre, buy on condition not colour. The reason being if you will only buy a black pre you have reduced your chances of finding a good car by 83.333333%. Check for headgasket, check for inner arch/front subframe mounting point rot, rear arch rot and 5th gear synchro problems and anything else can be fixed relatively inexpensively.

Good advice from Craig there. Of course a PB pre is the ONLY one to have....other colours are available  I might possibly be biased however.......Seriously though, as everyone has said, take your time and especially check 5th gear, bulkhead rot (read the posts on this as they will save you a lot of time, aggro and of course cash) Mods can be done to add vitality to the car without making it chav....just enhancing...Happy hunting

Cheers for the advice Craig. My hopes for pirate black are just hopes. I'm not a fan of the atr in red. But the silver one still catches the eye. My main concerns are finding one that's as standard as possible. And the service history is a key factor too. Other than that there is some wiggle room in my search. But it's still gonna be a few weeks before I'm in a position to make a purchase. Who knows. I could get lucky by then. Cheers for all the messages guys.

Good man frazz. I think I might have stumbled upon a thread u were on. Had seen there's a few atr's appearing in glaagow and surrounding areas.
And thanks shekster, it took me a while but I managed to find pinklady in the members list. From reading her posts I get the feeling she aint looking to sell. But it's quite a nice example.

Welcome to the forum TFO.

Don't get too hung up on finding an unmodified one, many mods are purposeful and you will probably end up doing them anyway!

Bear in mind there will be little difference in the sale value between a stock and a lowered car. But if you have a stock car and decide to fit coilovers, you are looking at a cost around £1k. With a modified car, the money has already been spent
