Sup fella's! Proud to say I own one of these awesome cars and loving every moment!

I bought my 1998 ATR for £300! Had been sat on an axle stand outside for 3 years with a seized engine.

I also own a 1994 Toyota Celica GT4 Wrc #2285 that I have modified and also done a forged engine build. I have had this car for many years and longer than my ATR.

Once i got the ATR home and started playing, i managed to un-sieze the engine and have it running within a couple of hours!! Very noisy though but ran fine.

I pulled the engine out and stripped it to bare block where i found a spun crank bearing on cylinder 4 with a bent conrod also.

Crank regrind, stage 1 clutch & forged pistons & conrods later she runs and pulls like a beast now! The rest of the car isnt perfect and does need attention.. I dont think the previous owners looked after her very well. But she is on the road now went straight through m.o.t!

I had to do balance shaft delete as i noticed a knocking coming from the rear shaft in the block. Also made my own manual cambelt tensioner as the hydro wasnt working atall!

She revs to 8000rpm flat, pulls very strong on vtec.. Is this normal??

Only remaining issue I have is noisy cam / rockers.. Sounds like a bag of spanners cold but goes nice and quiet when the engine is warm.. I have done valve clearences and it hasnt made a difference.. Any ideas?

Cheers guys!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Any advise should be in the 'problems and solution section' which is a paid for section but I think yours is a bit more than what you could find out in there. ;)

Many thanks guys! I intend to 😊 haha i did just bring the car to japfest at silverstone, camped overnight in the golf club next door. It was her maiden voyage since the build!! Was eying up everyone's ATR on the club stand lol!

Is it a common place to have noisy cylinder heads on these cars? Mines knocking its tits off.. Got a spare laying around and how much?

Cheers

You would have spied my ATR on the group stand then :hello2:

ATR's can be a bit 'ticky', so worth getting the valve clearances done and see how it is from there :agree:

Which one was yours mate? I most probably would remember lol!

Yeah I have done valve adjustments to no avail.. Seems to go quiet about 1500-1900 rpm then comes back. Drives fine and goes on power fine just bloody noisy.

Its been like this since the bottom end rebuild, I have to remember I bought the car with a siezed engine so it had failed being starved of oil. Wondering if the failure has knackered the rocker shafts.. Whilst doing the valve adjustments i can move each rocker freely on the shaft up and down about 2-3mm. Is this normal?

Il get some pics up when i get home from work!

You may have something else going on in there yeah, I take it that it had a new tensioner kit put on it when the bottom end was rebuilt? They're known to get noisy when they're on their way out.

Very nice mate, yeah i definately remember that one 😉

Yeah it has a manual tensioner on it which is taut.. It sounds like an old ford cylinder head with noisy rockers.. Im pretty sure the lma's and rocker assemblys are buggered lol.

Im trying to source a replacement cylinder head if anyone can help..?
