Hi All, I recently bought my "unicorn" car. An accord Type R, a car I always wanted years ago but settled for a 1.8vti civic instead.

Its an 02 Facelift in Silver. 132k on the clock and the last owner for 12 years.

Currently SORNED until spring when I will dispose of my current vehicle.

Thinking I should get the EGR cleaned and the recent (previous owners) work on the belts/balancers checked.?

Thanks for the reply. Previous owner was an enthusiast (12 years!). Had the cam belt (and I think the tensioner) done recently, I will double check the paperwork when I have time. Not noticed a rattle at 2k revs (or any revs)

I did notice on the long drive home (but not during test drive) that there was a rev dependant sound like a sewing machine I am no expert. I worried it might be tappetty in nature however one of my pro mechanic neighbours assures me that it sounds OK an likely to be the (normal sound of) injectors.. Its more noticeable when driving the car than with you head under the bay. I will have a months overlap next year so will take it in to my local mechanic.

Previous owner fitted K&N Typhoon, Cat back Stainless Powerflow exhaust and drilled grooved discs all round.

Raw

being a larger engine more pull above and below vtec. The MB6 was similar in the way the vtec kicks in though rather than gradual, just that the Accord is visceral by comparison.

Feels heavier to drive than I remember the MB6 being although it was a long time ago! My 1.8vti was my favorite previous car, I tried to track it down recently however it has not been MOTed for yeas and its not SORNED either so probably dead. :-( I sold it to a guy in North Yorkshire and it was MOTed by the same place for several years and then nothing. (very little went wrong with it)

I think I am going the Accord on the road from December as I am itching to start driving it.

Well its now been on the road for a week, 155 miles on and I have the following observations.

Noisy suspension! Did not really appreciate how noisy the suspension can be on these, I suppose it does not help that I have been used to brand new cars for several years. Same goes for the engine noise and the hydraulic steering.

I have had the car looked at and driven by an independent local Japanese car specialist and I have been assured that the suspension noise and the engine noises (which I thought could be tappet noise) are all completely normal for the car and that its drives perfectly.

They have found some jobs however.

Corrosion on rear brake pipes
OSF upper wishbone required replacement (rubber mount becoming detached) - will do both sides with non OEM parts
Small rust host on OSF wheel arch to engine bay. (50quids worth of welding)
Perished OS steering rack gaiter

I am also getting the gearbox oil replaced as I have no evidence its been done unlike the oil/filter and belts very recently. Previous owner used Unipart fully synth 5w/30. I believe that this will be OK to use until I do a flush and change next year to 5w/40.

My power steering oil cooler pipe has badly corroded fins which I am sure will come as no surprise to you all, it appears its no longer possible to obtain the original Honda OEM part. As my headlight washer is not working I intend to use this part from ebay....

https://www.ebay.co....353.m1438.l2649

and get both jobs done while the bumper is off.

Don't het me wrong regarding my comments about the heavy/noisy nature of the car. I love it to bits and doubt I will ever sell it. I do not have any issues with the characteristics of the car as long as they are not faults and if they are then I will get them fixed.

Is it easy to replace both of the cigarette lighter illumination bulbs?

Oh and my enthusiastic driving has seen me return 17mpg :evil4: :sad5:

I recommend you get the wheel arch rust fixed asap. Don't stint on it - you don't want it coming back!

I will certainly get the welding done week after next. The other jobs are being done next week. I would have got the welding done at the same time but the garage where they are doing the work brings a welder in and they wanted 160 quid !

For the steering oil cooler try Simon ( in the Group buys) as I'm sure you can get it cheaper on here. Or try if its him on eBay and state that you're on here now. ;)
