Hi

New owner b2yls, b2yls because its my registration plate. I wanted Bails as that’s how I’m known but that user has already been claimed. Strangely by a thread I’m going to reference……..

So I’ve been turned on to VTEC by driving my sons modified DC5. I currently drive a modified E46 320D but I wanted something with VTEC, something more exciting. I fancied a DC5 myself as its an absolute beast, but it would look seriously uncool for a 53 yr old bloke to own as a daily. FD2’s are very nice, but above my budget unfortunately.

So a couple of months ago I stumbled across the ATR, I never knew they existed. After reading many reviews and discovering the issues, I thought ‘that’ll do, a type R for grown-ups’!!!!!

After travelling the length and breadth of the country looking at dogs, I found one last week so went to buy it. I thought the price sounded reasonable for how it looked and how the MOT history had barely a mention of rust down the years.

So what is the car? Its known to a few on here, maybe more as it seems to have had many owners (apparently, through social media). Its Vesuvio Red S690 NLX.

Earlier in the year ctrsam had it for a few months in the New Members – New member from Derby thread. He had grand plans for it. Im not sure what happened but 4 or 5 months later it was owned by a bloke named Joe, and was again for sale.

Prior to this a guy named Roger had it for a while. He has some nice images on Instagram.

It was and is on the first page in the for sale forum, for sale by ATREDDIE back in 2014. The 6th post in that thread is by ‘bails’, mentioned in the first para.

So anyway I bought it, but did a stupid thing. The seller had lost the log book. The deal was pretty much done at the point that he mentioned it and I so wanted it that I let my heart rule my head. Stupid I know as I cannot do anything with it for about 6 weeks and Ive taken a massive gamble. I never considered that he could have taken a log book loan against it. Its fingers crossed and hope for the best.

So whats up with it?

ABS light is on – am hoping that’s just a sensor

Power steering is very lumpy and squeaky at low speed. Its horrible but I’m hoping its just the pump and that a second hand one will sort it.

Wipers just seem to rest at the position they are when you cancel them them. You have to be very accurate when you turn them off.

I have been in the boot tyre well this morning to find 2” of water. Admittedly it been stood and we've had a hell of a lot of rain this week. A previous owner purchased a trunk weather strip in mid 2016 so I’m unsure how the water is getting in.

It had lovely 18” gun metal grey wheels when Roger owned it but is now sitting on white rota fighters. I don’t mind them too much, except the rears are 9J and running 255’s. A bit unnecessary if you ask me and I’ll be looking for something a bit more conservative when the tyres need replacing.

If anyone has any thoughts on the issues, or can fill in some of the gaps for me I’d be very grateful. Just please don’t tell me I’ve bought a puppy.

Cheers,
B2yls

Welcome and glad to hear its gone to a good home

Get the fuel lines checked as I mentioned they need doing and not sure if they were done, were pretty rotten when it was inspected at vtec direct.

I've now got another one that's actually at vtec direct now getting a forged engine built. The only reason I got rid of that one was the sheer amount of money I was planning to put into it, bought a car with a much higher spec in the first place.

I think all the wipers do that as my current one does, also it never leaked any water in my ownership and stood outside all the time.

Hey SEVEN40, many thanks.

Hi Sam,

thanks for the info, if you have any more I'd be very grateful. Due to the log book issue, its sat on my drive and I cant do anything with it for now. Once I can get it somewhere near road legal I'm planning on getting it to the garage for the work I mentioned. I'll get those fuel lines checked, thanks for the heads up.

Is the power steering issue common and an easy fix? Does anyone know?

Regards,
b2yls.

The wheels were oem fn2 18" wheels with 215-40-18's and never once scrubbed no matter how enthusiastically you drove.

I know Joey mentioned some problems with the gearbox not being the correct type r variant but don't quote me on that, I never had any issues with it in my time apart from the rear callipers and an o/s/f calliper (might still be silver unless Joey painted it)

I did chuck in a new replacement air filter and some bits and bobs I had lying around.

Before me it was owned by a lad called Jason, jmcabco on here.

Below is a list of the bits I did on it

Date Description Mileage Cost
16/06/2017 Changed crank pulley and belt, N/S/R door fixed (wasn’t opening) 117200 £65
19/06/2017 Bonnet, Grill resprayed, headlights polished, bumper vent fitted 117320 £150
27/06/2017 Oil Change, Plugs changed, fuel filter, vtec solenoid and gasket, caliper leaking, replacement suspension arms 117500 £400
18/07/2017 Parts - Poly ARB Bushes, Tracks Rods, Rear Lower Arms, Front Upper Arms £220
25/07/2017 Fitting Rear callipers, rear arms, front arms, track rods 117720 £305
05/08/2017 Replacement tyres set of 4, 215-40-18 117800 £370

Thanks Moyz.

I think I noticed earlier that you have posted a few threads in the Probs and solutions, specifically around ABS issues. I cant get at any of these, as a newbie do I need a certain amount of posts or something?

I'm looking at solutions for the ABS light, the horrible power steering, and the indicator cancel point/rest position.

Hi Sam, thanks for all this information. I appreciate you taking the time to post it.

That's a serious amount of money you spent there. I hope I don't have to.......

It looks like it must have been Joe that swapped the wheels out. Shame really.

Cheers,

To access the technical information, you used to have to pay for it. However the forum admin have agreed recently to remove the paywall to access these threads...not sure when thats going to happen though as its just been green lit in the past couple of days. If you need any information about the ABS codes have a read of this page: http://www.accordr.o...n/page__st__140

The socket I'm talking about is a small, blue one with 5 pins. I'm sure my Photobucket account is open to the public so search 'Moyzatron' in the users and you should find a picture of it there.

Good luck!

Hi Moyz,

thanks for that. Not really got the time at the mo to digest it all. I cant get at the images. So its jump 3 and 5, ignition on and long flashes followed by short flashes to give the code (is it the ABS light that flashes?), if I'm reading it right. I think I'll give it my mechanic first, and then maybe look at obtaining the code if he cant fix it.

Cheers.

Another thing. I have no rear view mirror. Well I do, but the mirror and frame only, nothing to attach it to the windscreen with.

There are a few for sale on ebay, but the end of the neck or arm looks like it slides into a fitting (male and female) as they have a ridged profile if that makes sense. Do I need something to attach to the windscreen first, or do I just stick the thing to the window?

Cheers,
b2yls.

A good bit of double sided sticky tape/foam from the likes of 3M would probably work to stick the baseplate of the rear view mirror onto the windscreen.

Welcome :hello2:

I am a new owner myself having bought a facelift last month. It goes on the road on Friday! :love10:

Being 48 and a half myself I probably bought one for the same reasons you have. I have had several Hondas and toyed with getting a CH1 many years ago when they where 3/4/5/ year old cars. Nearest I got was an MB6 1.8vti.

Hi JK1245.

That's part of the issue, I think there is a separate baseplate that would have a flat surface that sticks to the windscreen, and then the arm or neck on the rear of the mirror sits into the base plate.

I'm happy to be corrected, in fact more than happy but if anyone could look at ebay items 253121956579, 202014379747, and/or 162132992637, you'd see what I mean.

The main stealer is about 2 minutes from my work, I might just have a wander over tomorrow lunchtime. Cant do any harm.

Hi toyracer69.

Yep, that's what I thought. Would seem strange any other way.

I guess I'll have to swap out the wiper motor and see how it goes. I don't think the intermittent works either.

Is there an adjustable speed setting for the intermittent? I cant find one.

Hey Jester,

you lucky, lucky, so-and-so....... I'm so jealous.

I reckon it will be another 4 weeks or so till I get my log book. If I ever do..... :-( (stupid boy)

I think I'm just having my second mid-life crisis pal. My first one was about 20 years ago. :-)

Cheers,

Welcome to the gang. I'm nearly 50 so I know how you feel. Nearly bought one 10 years ago but did buy one eventually and did it properly :agree:
