Hi everyone,

I came of (driving) age in the 90s and fell quickly in love with Hondas, having been lucky to start with a B16A DOHC Civic sedan (in Singapore), then an Integra and a Prelude H22A in Australia. I've always preferred sedans though and looked enviously from afar when the Accord Type R came out in the UK. I assumed I would never get the chance to even see, let alone own, one.

But then lo and behold, late last year I discovered one came to Australia many years ago when its original owner migrated here. He eventually sold it to a collector, who took pretty good care of it until finally needing to sell because he was running out of space in his garage. Fortunately for me no one here seemed to realise what it was because despite its good condition and very reasonable price, it sat unsold for ages until I discovered it. It's a 2002 model that has many miles on the clock (137,000) but which seems to have been well maintained, is rust free, and drives like a dream. Its only modification is an Eibach suspension kit, which I'm certainly happy with.

My goal is to steadily restore it to near-new condition. I've resprayed the wheels, fixed aging mechanical bits (new clutch, new CV joint, cleaned out the gummed up EGR, new timing belts, gaskets, and replaced the exhaust pipe b/w the cat and the resonator). I've also had the interior detailed, fixed myriad minor dents, and am now looking to have it resprayed and then paint protected. While the paintwork is still looking good overall, it's clear it's been resprayed in parts over the years and looks quite patchwork in the light. I'd also like to get the engine rocker cover resprayed too.

I also need to replace the headlights (cleaning them hasn't helped much), the foglights (one of them is badly cracked), the front red Honda badge (also cracked) and the red 'H' badges for the wheels (the respray process destroyed the originals). Getting parts is understandably difficult here as the Australian Accord of the era was quite different, so I'll check out this forum for suggestions on where to get parts in the UK.

I was so glad to see this forum exist and am glad to now be a part of it.

Cheers,
Eric

Hello and welcome in Eric !

Please post some more pictures of your car !
About the parts it is going to be really hard to source them. They are discontinued since a long time , so looking on Ebay.UK may be the route to find them in a good condition.
About the front light, you may buy some aftermarket and take off the cover to put them on yours, it is what i'm going to do, as soon as i'll have money for that.

Cheers!

Hello and welcome.

Pretty sure yours is the ONLY ATR in Australia as I remember the original owner asking about how to export the car with him when he went. :agree:

They'll probably even be a thread about it on here somewhere if you search for it. ;)
Lapping!

Thank you, that's really interesting to hear - I'll have a look :)

It gels too with what the previous owner here discovered based on his interactions with state registration authorities. There are a few JDM Euro Rs around, but no actual ATRs.

Thank you, and yes indeed :) Once I get it fixed up I plan to do the odd track day too, to ensure I still drive it as intended.

I also need to replace the headlights (cleaning them hasn't helped much),

Whatis wrong with them? If because of yellowing then all is needed is light sanding and a clearcoat(any car painter can do it). It is PC plastic with coating from factory.

Hey Oto, apologies for the delay in replying. Yeah, I've actually just had the car resprayed and they restored the headlights too - they look almost new again. So happy :)

Very nice, there seem to be a few CH1's in Oz now, I very nearly bought a purple CH1 but as I needed a daily I preferred the CL7.
